Why do we do so many songs with movements, especially for young learners? It doesn’t seem connected, but we keep students moving to increase their vocabulary! Total Physical Response (TPR) is a method of language teaching which intends to create a link between body movement and verbal input. By acting out words, students internalize the word’s meaning and create a brain link between action and speech. With TPR, students learn the meaning of words they hear by direct observation. They see and feel the meaning of the word before being told what it means. TPR also has the benefit of keeping students physically active, and has even been linked to reduction of stress and anxiety. At home, you can encourage this type of language learning by playing the game “Simon Says,” playing a “follow me” game where students follow your actions, and reading and acting out action books like “From Head to Toe” by Eric Carle or “We’re Going on A Bear Hunt” by Michael Rosen. Epic Arts Cafe is a Kampot-based social enterprise that grew from one woman’s wish to provide work opportunities for deaf and disabled people as well as a welcoming and accommodating hang-out for them, particularly deaf students. Established in 2006, today the Cafe stands as a model for an inclusive working environment within the local community, providing employment for people and raising funds that go towards the other work carried out by the Epic Arts organisation. “In 2003 Katie Goad who is one of epic arts founder travelled to Cambodia and saw a need for the arts in Kampot to promote disability right,” Epic Arts’ director for Cambodia Onn Sokny tells The Post. Residents wait for their turn to get vaccinated against Covid-19 in Preah Sihanouk province on June 22. Preah Sihanouk Provincial Administration Six more provinces announced the launch of their Covid-19 vaccination campaigns for garment workers and people aged 18 and over as the national immunisation programme moves ahead faster than planned. According to a notice made public on June 29, the provinces include Kampong Chhnang, Banteay Meanchey, Pursat, Kampong Cham, Tbong Khmum and Svay Rieng. In Banteay Meanchey, provincial governor Um Reatrey held a meeting to review the vaccination plan in Poipet town that is facing high risks of transmission. “The vaccination campaign in Poipet town will begin on July 1. We will inoculate all 60,000 residents,” he said. The provincial administration has prepared nine vaccination sites and 15 medical teams to administer injections in the town. Cambodia is tentatively planning to reopen schools – at least at the secondary level – when the vaccination of children aged 12-17 is completed, even though daily transmissions and deaths in other age groups remain high. Schools across the country have been suspended since March 20, one month after the third community cluster transmission broke out on February 20. Classes have been conducted virtually since then. As of July 18, the Kingdom had recorded a total of 67,181 Covid-19 cases with 58,930 recoveries and 1,106 fatalities.
